Admitted Insurer
An insurer licensed by a state's department of insurance to transact business there.
Admitted (authorized) insurers are subject to state solvency regulation and participate in the guaranty association. Non-admitted (surplus lines) insurers are not licensed in the state and are used only when admitted coverage is unavailable.
