Beneficiary

The person or entity designated to receive the death benefit.

Beneficiaries may be primary (first in line) or contingent (paid if the primary predeceases the insured). A revocable beneficiary can be changed by the owner at will; an irrevocable beneficiary must consent to changes. Distribution among multiple beneficiaries can be per stirpes or per capita.
